Biography

In a nutshell Andy is a Photographer, Artist,  Writer, Educator (he has a CTLLS), Customer Delivery Assistant, Assistant Bee-Keeper, Marathon runner ,  Husband and  dog owner   etc, though not necessarily in this order.

Not content with an O level in Art, Andy requested and was duly bought an Olympus OM-10 for his eighteenth birthday back in 1980. His first considered success, a Portuguese fishermen wearing a Union Jack t-shirt taken whilst on holiday in the Algarve still hangs on his office wall. His second success ‘Eastbourne Bandstand’  nearly won him a Ford Escort XR3i car in a national competition but instead he had to settle for joint second place and a Pentax SFX camera. Photography became “an itch that continually needed scratching” and 29 years later it remains as strong as ever.

Brought up during the ‘Golden Age of Children’s Television’ and allowed to stay up to watch classic comedies; Dad’s Army, Steptoe and Son, Til Death us Do Part etc, visual literacy and humour has always been important to Andy. Photography is Andy’s way of making sense of this world and tracking his journey through it. He’s equally comfortable in the urban or rural environment. Englishness is a central theme to much of his work these days.

Recently graduating with an MA in Photography from Leicester De Montfort under the tutelage of Professor Paul Hill and Mike Simmons, Andy continues to develop his practice.

If you’re looking for Andy Greaves the Ventriloquist then sorry but this is not him, please accept our apologies. A link has been provided to his site.

NB : Andy wrote this himself in the third person for a good reason but has now forgotten what that reason was. It was probably to make him sound more important than he actually is.

  3. Hi Andy, FANTASTIC. Thanks for the award. Getting an award for doing something I love doing is brilliant. I appreciate you thinking of Postcard Cafe. I will forfil my side of the award tomorrow when I have more time. I’ll mention it on the blog and link back to you etc. I’ll have to think who to nominate… Hmmmm! I can think of a couple but 5 may be tricky. I will take a look at the Caramel Slice blog. Such devotion sounds intriguing. Thanks again. Best wishes…Nigel

  4. Hi Andy, I just noticed that a few people are clicking through from your site. Thank you for adding me to you “Interesting blogs”. My last three posts on Postcard Cafe all relate to Bill Drummonds new exhibition at the Site Gallery in Sheffield. If you like Drummonds work and can make the exhibition it’s well worth a look. There is work by Mr D, photographs by Tracey Moberly and a video by Andy (whose surname I’ve forgotten). Bill will rarely agree to be on video so it makes for an interesting half hour! Thanks again and best wishes. Nigel

    • Nigel – That’s good to know, first that people are looking at my site and secondly I’m assisting yourself. Thanks for the info re Bill Drummond, i’ll certainly try and get over to Site. Was the video by Andy Brown ? whom I think had a walk around Sheffield with Bill last week if I remember his Facebook comment. Andy and I know each other.
Currently I’m doing quite a bit of street photography mainly in Chesterfield but sometimes when i get the chance over in Sheffield, and other photographic stuff.
      Keep up the good work
      Andy

      • Hi Andy, The Andy who made the Bill D video is from Manchester. I met him last year when he made the video with Bill. I chatted briefly with him this year too. He was at the opening of the exhibition on Friday night and also on the walk and talk with Bill on Saturday. If your friend Andy is from Manchester and went to see Laurie Anderson on Saturday night then we are probably talking about the same person!!! Phew! Glad we sorted that…..

  5. Ah ha! The Andy you mean is Andy Brown. I have met him! He gave a talk at Push Pull last month. He presented a slide show of his work at the Childrens Hospital. It was a fascinating talk and amazing photographs. He had incredible access to all areas and must have worked really hard on the project to achieve such great coutcomes. I spoke to him briefly afterwards. (The other two involved were Shaun Bloodworth and Richard Hanson)
Are you familiar with Push Pull? http://pushpullphotography.blogspot.co.uk/ It is held once a month and is always an interesting night.
Glad we got the Andys sorted out. Cheers
